A family vacation can fall apart before it starts: the connection that runs late, the hour-long transfer with a toddler who has had enough, the rental car line, the hotel pool that turns out to be a rectangle with a sign that says no running. By day three, the parents need a vacation from the vacation.
So this is our list of the easy ones. Ten trips where the hard part is done for you: a nonstop flight from plenty of US cities, a short ride from the airport, no rental car needed, and a hotel with a pool or a kids’ club good enough that nobody asks what we are doing today. Each one gets a quick Hassle Check, and two hotels we would book.

What makes a family trip easy
We used five tests. The flight: nonstops from a good spread of US cities, because a connection with small kids is where trips go wrong. The transfer: roughly half an hour or less from the airport to the hotel, a little more for one Riviera Maya pick with a good reason. The car: you should not need one. The pool or club: something that keeps kids happy for hours. The paperwork: we note which trips need a passport, because the answer catches families out.
Book the hotel before the flights. Family suites, connecting rooms and villas with kitchens are the first rooms to go over school breaks, and most of the links below show options with free cancellation.

1. Orlando, Florida: stay inside the bubble

Orlando has more nonstop flights than almost anywhere on this list, and the trick to an easy trip is never leaving the theme park bubble. Stay on property and the parks come to you by monorail, boat, bus or a walk. From the airport, the Mears Connect shuttle runs around the clock to every Disney resort hotel, the replacement for the old Magical Express.
There is no kids’ club at the hotels we picked, and you will not miss one. The parks are the club. What you want is a pool good enough for a day off, and a short way home for the afternoon nap.
✈ Hassle Check
Flight: nonstops from most US cities into Orlando International
Transfer: about 30 minutes by Mears Connect shuttle or rideshare
Car: not needed if you stay on property
Pool: big themed pools with water slides at both hotels
Passport: not needed
✈ Where to stay: Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort for the monorail to Magic Kingdom and a 142-foot slide out of a volcano at the Lava Pool (the resort is mid-refurbishment into early 2027, but Disney says most pools and amenities stay open), or Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort for family suites with kitchenettes that sleep six, a lazy river, a bowling alley and early park admission.
✈ Pool notes: Cabana Bay is in Pool Atlas, our sister guide to the world’s best hotel pools.
2. San Diego, California: the easy West Coast option

San Diego’s airport sits practically downtown, about fifteen minutes from both hotels below. Winter here is not tropical, so the heated pool matters, but there is no hurricane season to plan around, no passport, and the zoo, the beach and the harbor are all close by.
Coronado is the easy base: a flat, walkable island town with a wide sandy beach out front. Mission Bay is calmer water, a lagoon of beaches and paths where small kids can paddle without waves.
✈ Hassle Check
Flight: the airport has nonstops to 87 destinations, including Boston and Raleigh-Durham
Transfer: about 15 minutes
Car: optional on Coronado, handy for the zoo and SeaWorld
Kids’ club: Ocean Explorers at the Hotel del Coronado, ages 4 to 12, Thursday to Sunday
Passport: not needed
✈ Where to stay: Hotel del Coronado for the grand old Victorian on the sand, freshly restored, with pools heated to about 80 to 85°F all year and a new kids’ club, or Paradise Point Resort & Spa for bungalow rooms on its own 44-acre island in Mission Bay, five pools and a mile of sandy beach. Or see all places to stay on Coronado.
✈ Make a day of it: get San Diego Zoo tickets and harbor cruises ahead of time
3. Puerto Rico: the Caribbean without a passport

Puerto Rico is a US territory, so US citizens fly in on a domestic flight with no passport and pay in dollars. That alone takes a whole layer of planning off the table. Nonstops arrive from 37 mainland cities, with the most from Orlando, Miami and the Northeast.
Stay near San Juan and you are fifteen minutes from the airport. Head east toward Río Grande and you are near Luquillo’s calm beach and the El Yunque rainforest, which is the one day trip worth renting a car for.
✈ Hassle Check
Flight: nonstops from 37 mainland US cities
Transfer: 15 minutes to San Juan, about 30 to Río Grande
Car: optional, worth it for a day in El Yunque
Calm water: Caribe Hilton has its own wave-protected beach lagoon
Passport: not needed for US citizens
✈ Where to stay: Caribe Hilton for a private, wave-protected beach lagoon, a kids’ fountain pool and childcare for a fee, fifteen minutes from the airport, or Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico for big rooms (every one is at least 520 square feet), a lagoon-style pool, a kids’ pool and villas near El Yunque. Or see all places to stay in Condado and San Juan.
✈ Make a day of it: skip the rental car and book a family tour of El Yunque
4. Oahu, Hawaii: the lagoons of Ko Olina

Ko Olina, on Oahu’s west coast, is built around a row of man-made lagoons sheltered by rock breakwaters. The water is calm enough for small kids, and the resorts sit right on the sand, about half an hour from Honolulu’s airport without ever going near Waikiki traffic.
Hawaii is a long flight from the East Coast, but a surprising number of nonstops exist, from Atlanta, Detroit, New York, Boston, Newark and Washington Dulles, plus nearly every big West Coast city. One date to know: Aulani’s lazy river and tube slide are scheduled to close from April 5 to May 7, 2027, so check before you book an April trip.
✈ Hassle Check
Flight: nonstops from the West Coast and several East Coast hubs
Transfer: about 30 minutes from Honolulu
Car: optional, only for excursions
Kids’ club: included at both hotels: ages 3 to 12 at Aulani, 5 to 12 at the Four Seasons
Passport: not needed
✈ Where to stay: Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa for Aunty’s Beach House, a kids’ club included for ages 3 to 12, and the Waikolohe Stream, a lazy river that floats through caverns, or Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina for a calmer stay with a complimentary kids’ club for ages 5 to 12, a keiki pool and one- to three-bedroom suites. Or see all places to stay in Ko Olina.
✈ Make a day of it: see family snorkel and dolphin-watching trips on Oahu’s west coast
5. Maui, Hawaii: the pool that ruins all other pools

Wailea, on Maui’s sunny south shore, is a strip of golden beaches and resorts about half an hour from Kahului airport. It is our pick for families who want Hawaii with a little more room, and one hotel here has a pool so elaborate it deserves its own paragraph.
That is the Grand Wailea’s Wailea Canyon Activity Pool: nine pools stepping down six levels, seven waterslides, a rope swing, a sand-bottomed beach for little ones and what the resort calls the world’s first water elevator, which carries swimmers back up to the top. Your kids will talk about it for years!
✈ Hassle Check
Flight: nonstops from the West Coast, plus Atlanta in winter
Transfer: about 25 to 30 minutes from Kahului
Car: optional, only for excursions
Kids’ club: the Grand Wailea’s Keiki Club for ages 5 to 12, paid, by reservation
Passport: not needed
✈ Where to stay: Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort for the Wailea Canyon pool and the Keiki Club, or Fairmont Kea Lani for room to spread out: it is all suites and villas, with kitchen basics in the suites, full kitchens in the villas and a 140-foot waterslide. Or see all places to stay in Wailea.
✈ Pool notes: the Wailea Canyon Activity Pool has a full write-up on Pool Atlas, our sister guide to the world’s best hotel pools.
✈ Make a day of it: see family snorkel trips to the Molokini crater
6. Aruba: the one outside the hurricane belt

Aruba sits outside the hurricane belt, which makes it the most dependable Caribbean pick on this list for any time of year. The west coast beaches face calm, clear water, the resorts line up along Palm Beach a short drive from the airport, and nonstops arrive from 18 US cities.
It is also the place on our list where a villa with a full kitchen and a washing machine makes the most sense. A week of breakfasts in, and swimsuits clean every morning, is a quiet kind of luxury with kids.
✈ Hassle Check
Flight: nonstops from 18 US cities, including New York, Boston, Atlanta and Charlotte
Transfer: the resorts are about 6 to 7 miles from the airport
Car: optional
Kids’ club: Camp Hyatt at the Hyatt, and a complimentary club for ages 4 to 12 at the Surf Club
Passport: yes, a passport book
✈ Where to stay: Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort Spa and Casino for the island’s tallest resort waterslide, a shallow splash area, family suites and an adults-only pool for a parents’ hour, or Marriott’s Aruba Surf Club for one- to three-bedroom villas with full kitchens and washer-dryers, a lazy river and three separate kids’ pools. Or see all places to stay on Palm Beach.
✈ Make a day of it: see family catamaran and snorkel trips in Aruba
7. Turks and Caicos: Grace Bay and a waterpark

Grace Bay, on the island of Providenciales, is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, and its shallow, reef-protected water is about as kind to small swimmers as the ocean gets. The airport is twenty to thirty minutes away, with nonstops from about 20 US cities, some of them seasonal.
This is the trip for families who want everything handled. At an all-inclusive like Beaches, meals, kids’ camps and the waterpark are all part of the stay, and nobody has to carry a wallet to the pool.
✈ Hassle Check
Flight: nonstops from about 20 US cities, some seasonal
Transfer: 20 to 30 minutes to Grace Bay
Car: not needed at Beaches, optional at The Palms
Kids’ club: included at both hotels
Passport: yes, a passport book
✈ Where to stay: Beaches Turks & Caicos for an all-inclusive with kids’ camps for every age from babies to teens, a 45,000-square-foot pirate-themed waterpark and a surf simulator, or The Palms Turks and Caicos for a calmer Grace Bay stay, where every suite has a full kitchen and the Conch Kritters club for ages 4 to 12 is free. Or see all places to stay on Grace Bay.
✈ Make a day of it: see family snorkel and glass-bottom boat trips from Grace Bay
8. The Bahamas: two waterparks, one short flight

Nassau is a short hop from Florida and the East Coast, with nonstops from about two dozen US cities. It is the closest thing to a theme park vacation in the Caribbean: both hotels below come with a full waterpark, free for guests.
Atlantis’s Aquaventure covers 141 acres, with a river ride about a mile long and the Leap of Faith, a 60-foot drop from a Mayan temple through a clear tunnel in a shark lagoon (riders must be at least 48 inches tall). Over at Baha Mar, guests get the Baha Bay waterpark and suites with full kitchens.
✈ Hassle Check
Flight: nonstops from about 23 US cities, most from Florida and the East Coast
Transfer: about 30 minutes to Paradise Island
Car: not needed
Kids’ club: at both hotels, for a fee
Passport: yes, a passport book
✈ Where to stay: Atlantis Paradise Island for unlimited Aquaventure, the Rapids River and a kids’ club for ages 3 to 12, or Grand Hyatt Baha Mar for free Baha Bay waterpark access and West Tower suites with full kitchens and washer-dryers.
9. Cancún and the Riviera Maya: all-inclusive, kids’ club included

Cancún has more nonstop flights from the US than any other beach destination on this list, from about 41 cities. That, plus all-inclusive resorts with kids’ clubs folded into the price, makes it the easiest international family trip there is.
Club Med is fifteen to twenty minutes from the airport. Grand Velas is farther down the coast in the Riviera Maya, so allow 35 minutes to an hour depending on traffic, which is the one exception we make to our half-hour rule. It earns it.
✈ Hassle Check
Flight: nonstops from about 41 US cities
Transfer: 15 to 20 minutes to Club Med, 35 to 60 to Grand Velas
Car: not needed, both are all-inclusive
Kids’ club: included at both, from age 4
Passport: yes, a passport book
✈ Where to stay: Club Med Cancún for an all-inclusive where the kids’ and teens’ clubs are included from age 4 to 17, three beaches and an oceanfront family pool, or Grand Velas Riviera Maya for the splurge: suites of over 1,000 square feet, calm swimming water and a kids’ club for ages 4 to 12 that runs until 10:45 at night, with a jungle-themed kids’ spa. Or see all family resorts in Cancún.
✈ Make a day of it: see tickets to Xcaret and the other eco parks near Playa del Carmen
10. Los Cabos, Mexico: come for the pools

Los Cabos is the West Coast family’s answer to Cancún: about 20 minutes from the airport to the resorts, nonstops from 21 US cities, and dry, sunny weather through the winter. Winter is also whale season, and spotting a humpback from a boat near El Arco is a core memory waiting to happen.
One honest note: the beaches in front of both hotels below are not safe for swimming, which is common along this stretch of coast. Families come for the pools, and these two have very good ones. For an ocean swim, Chileno Beach is about a mile from Grand Velas.
✈ Hassle Check
Flight: nonstops from 21 US cities, most from the West
Transfer: about 20 minutes
Car: not needed, both are all-inclusive
Kids’ club: included at both, ages 4 to 12
Passport: yes, a passport book
✈ Where to stay: Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos for an all-inclusive with its own water park, five slides and a heated toddler splash pool, or Grand Velas Los Cabos for the splurge: family suites that sleep up to six and a complimentary kids’ club that runs until 11 at night. Or see all places to stay in Los Cabos.
✈ Make a day of it: see family whale-watching and glass-bottom boat trips to El Arco
When to go, and when to book
The sweet spot for most of these trips is December to April. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and the eastern Pacific season, which covers Los Cabos, from May 15 to November 30. Aruba sits outside the hurricane belt entirely, and Orlando, San Diego and Hawaii are easy all winter.
School breaks are when these resorts fill up, and the family suites go first. If you are planning for winter break, Presidents’ Day or spring break, book the hotel now on a refundable rate. Our guide to flying with kids covers the flight itself, and our airplane snack guide covers what gets through security.
Family vacations, quickly answered
What makes a family vacation low-hassle?
Fewer moving parts. A nonstop flight, a short transfer, one hotel for the whole stay and no rental car remove most of the things that go wrong with kids. A resort with a good pool or kids’ club does the rest, because it turns every afternoon into a day off.
Do kids need a passport for Mexico, the Bahamas, Aruba or Turks and Caicos?
Yes. Everyone flying internationally needs a passport book, including babies. The US passport card is not valid for international air travel. Puerto Rico is the exception on this list: it is a US territory, so no passport is needed for US citizens.
Are kids’ clubs free?
It depends on the resort. On this list, the kids’ clubs are included at Aulani, the Four Seasons Oahu, Club Med Cancún (from age 4), Beaches Turks and Caicos, both Grand Velas resorts, Hyatt Ziva, The Palms and Marriott’s Aruba Surf Club. Atlantis, Grand Hyatt Baha Mar and the Grand Wailea charge for theirs. Always check the age range, because many clubs start at 4 or 5.
Which family trips do not need a passport?
Orlando, San Diego, Puerto Rico and Hawaii. Puerto Rico is the easiest way to get a Caribbean beach without one, with nonstops from 37 mainland US cities.
